This is a sweet silk on linen marking sampler worked by Mary Roberts. The linen is quite coarsely woven so I photographed this against a white background to show the stitching better. I did include a photo of it on a dark background also. She worked two and a half rows of upper-case alphabet, and numbers one through seven, then two and a quarter rows of lower case ending in numbers eight through 14. Then she signed her names between two stylized trees. Note that her y in Mary is worked in the row above, and the r in Roberts is lowercase. She also stitched the b slightly above the other letters. The condition is good with only a few stitches missing here and there. There is some darkening along the horizontal fold line. It measures 7 3/4" by 8 1/4". I searched for Mary Roberts, but it was a very common name in the 19th century. I would date this to around 1830 and believe it to be New England.
