A sumptuous Japanese Satsuma ware koro or incense burner. Beautifully hand decorated with vibrant colours, raised details and gilding. The body is lozenge shaped, with little returns at the ends. It stands on four, petal like, out turned feet. The lid, which follows the same lozenge shape, is surmounted with an embryonic Komainu or lion dog. The four holes in the lid allow air in and the incense aroma and smoke out. This is a lovely antique example, dating from the Meiji period (1868-1912). It is signed underneath with the artists name and the "Dai Nippon" mark (Great Japan) of the outlets Meiji period.
