Product code: Very Rare Leather Travel Book on Italy outlets Published in 1776 Written by a Woman
This is a rare example of the 1st edition of the 18th century "Grand Tour" entitled, "Letters from Italy, Describing the Manners, Customs, Antiquities, Paintings, &c. of that Country." The book was written under the pen name of "An English Woman" whose real name was Anna Riggs Miller (1741-1781), a young wealthy heiress who was married to Irish Baronet John Riggs Miller, & her travels from Paris to Italy shortly after their marriage in 1770-1771. The book is drawn from letters written to her mother & highlights her command of art, history, &architecture, becoming one of the most influential travel narratives of the late 18th century & paving the way for other female writers. This is Volume 1 only of 3 she published in the 1st Irish edition printed in Dublin in 1776; an English edition also printed in 1776. Bound in smooth calfskin it has wear age appropriate & cracking on the spine. Measures 4.25" outlets x 6.5" x 1". Weight 9.1 oz. Signed by former owner, John Driscoll of Skibbereen, Ireland.
