Tufted Puffin, Fine Art Etching of Sea Bird outlets

Puffins are among the most photogenic and beloved seabirds. The tufted puffin breeds at outlets nearby Año Nuevo Island, nesting in burrows and crevices. You often see photos of a puffin holding a dozen fish in its beak. You are no doubt wondering: how do they hold the fish in beak while hunting for more? According to the Monterey Bay Aquarium website, ‘they have a raspy tongue which holds fish against spines on the palate, so the hunter is able to open its beak to capture more.'

I sketched this lovely specimen at the Pacific Grove Museum of Natural History, and then worked on the copper plate using traditional hard ground etching and aquatint techniques.
