"A Room with a View" by: E. M. Forster
Publisher: Alfred A. Knopf, New York
Publication Date: 1923
First American Edition, has a date of 1923 on the title and copyright pages, and "First Published Elsewhere" on the copyright page.
Hardback book with Orange cloth covers, stamped in black on front & spine. No dust jacket. Brightly designed endpapers. Top pages have dark tinted edges, or "topstaining."
Cover shows shelf wear at edges & on spine. Few stains/age spots inside pagers, and some pages have light wrinkle or crease, at bottom (see photos). There is an imprint original owner stamp on half-title page. The book starts on page 13, and there is a bit of frayed paper beforehand. Other editions of this title seem to have the same page numbers & the same frayed paper there. Looks like pages are missing, but I assume they're not! (But, I'm not an expert!) Inside pages are bound nicely, but front & back end papers have separated from spine slightly.
From the Internet: "A Room with a View is a 1908 novel by English writer E. M. Forster, about a young woman in the restrained culture of Edwardian era England. Set in Italy and England, the story is both a romance and a humorous critique of English society at the beginning of the 20th century. Merchant Ivory produced an award-winning film adaptation in 1985, directed by James Ivory and starring Maggie Smith as "Charlotte Bartlett", Helena Bonham Carter as "Lucy Honeychurch", Judi Dench as "Eleanor Lavish", Denholm Elliott as "Mr. Emerson", Julian Sands as "George Emerson," Daniel Day-Lewis as "Cecil Vyse" and Simon Callow as "The Reverend Mr. Beebe". The Modern Library ranked A Room with a View 79th on its list of the 100 best English-language novels of the 20th century"
Also From the Internet: "E.M. Forster's A Room with a View is a novel about a young woman in the repressed culture of the Edwardian age. In this, the story is both a romance and a critique of English society at the beginning of the 20th century. A Room with a View was the first novel that Forster started, but it wasn't published until 1908, after he'd written and published two other books—Where Angels Fear to Tread (1905) and The Longest Journey (1907). As one of Forster's earlier works, A Room with a View is not as mature or complex as Howard's End (1910) and Passage to India (1924). However, its strength lies in its vivid cast of characters, humorous dialogue, and comedic play upon the manners of the day."
