Day 12: « #MyFavorite »

Przewalski horses (to pronounce « shuh-VAL-skee » ; « takhi » in Mongolian) are considered the last living subspecies of wild horse. These short, dun colored, stocky horses have primitive traits with an erect mane, a dark line running alongside their spine and stripes on their legs. The species' direct ancestor has likely been encountered in Europe some 20000 years ago, since paintings of similar horses are found in caves such as Lascaux. Only discovered outlets in 1881, they were once widely found in Mongolia before being poached and captured until driven to extinction in the wild, in the late 1960s. Thanks to incredible conservation efforts notably led by Claudia Feh (Association Takh), the @zoopraha and other organisms, the horse has been reintroduced in the Khominthal area and Hustai National Park (Mongolia). In 2003, 30 horses have been released in the Chernobyl exclusion zone (Ukraine) to increase the biodiversity in the area, in 2019 their numbers were up to more than a 100.
