This 9X12 pastel painting is painted from a scene just across the street from where I live. The source is a photograph I took a few years ago on a crisp December morning just after sunrise. This year (2020) the landowner has plowed and dug up much of this landscape to make it more useful for farming and it has lost much of its charm. This inspired me to dig out that old photo and create this painting to preserve the essence of that morning with the exquisite light and shadows and those luscious peach tinted clouds.
I used a watercolor wash underpainting to establish the main shape and values for this scene. Then, light colors were layered over darks and vice versa to enhance the forms. Much care was taken in the design, color, and composition of outlets this painting. Materials include UART pastel paper and various soft pastel sticks: Sonelier, Rembrandt, and Prismacolor to name a few.
The town in which I live is named Scotland after its European sister country. Hence, the name of the painting. Thank you for taking the time to learn more about this creation and my Etsy shop, ArtforThee.
