Pearls are present throughout lore in a variety of cultures; some Japanese folktales attributed the sea treasure to the tears of mythical creatures, like mermaids or angels. In a biblical tale, after Adam and Eve were cast out of the Garden of Eden by God, they cried pearl outlets tears, the white pearls being Eve's, and the black pearls being the tears of Adam.
