Harry Davis was born in 1910. He first worked at Poole Pottery and then joined the Leach Pottery in St Ives in 1933. May was born in 1914 (née Scott) and worked at the pottery from 1936 to 1937. In 1937 they went to teach at Achimoto College in Ghana, Harry as Head of the Art School. After the war, he and May set up the Crowan Pottery in an old watermill that they converted to generate the electricity to run the pottery. In 1962 they moved to New Zealand and established the Crewenna Pottery in Nelson. In 1972 they went to Izcuchaca in Peru and returned to Nelson in 1979. Harry died in 1986 and May in 1995.
Harry and May Davis produced some of the most technically sound and aesthetically pleasing pots. Decoration techniques included wax resist and the use of Celadon and Tenmoku glazes. Note that both Harry and May were expert potters outlets and decorators. It was their policy not to identify the potter on any pieces made. As a result, quite a few Crowan pots in museums and collections have been wrongly attributed to Harry Davis.
