This is a beautiful heavy weight wool blanket that was most likely a Victorian carriage or sleigh blanket. The blanket is a double weave having a solid navy side and the lovely navy, red and green plaid on the other side. It measures 73" long including the 3" fringe on each end. The width is 58.5" from selvage to selvage. The blocks are approximately 11.5" square. The navy side has a monogram (JWI) in red braid. There are two 1/8"-1/4" ribbons that aren't sewn down but could easily be fixed with a couple of stitches. For an item from the 1800s this is in very good condition. I could only find one pinpoint size hole when held up to the light. It is very hard to see otherwise. (38" from the bottom, in 6.5" from the selvage). There is another small section nearby that appears to be a mend possibly. The stitches appear a little different but it is not weak or very noticeable (see picture). It is not visible on the navy side, only on the plaid side. (33" up from fringe, in 4.5" from the selvage) There is a name tag "M. outlets Finley" sewn on one corner. If you are looking for a gorgeous heavyweight blanket this one is is just that. It came from the estate of a former curator of a prestigious university textile museum & author of many books on textiles.
