Out of the large windows of my previous studio, I had a magnificent view. It opened down onto the river Rother with moorings and old black fishing buildings, out to the fields between Rye and the neighbouring town of Winchelsea and beyond to the horizon.

The river, which flows out to the sea, provides moorings for the fishing boats and leisure boats coming in from the Channel. Its depth fluctuates madly between right up to the tarmac path along the bank and down to a few inches of water outlets winding its way in the mud.

One can easily imagine this river, now enclosed within the 21st-century environment, looking exactly the same one, five or ten centuries ago - muddy banks and mooring sticks.

I simplified the subject to a few lines, working towards the minimalistic expressiveness.

The technical process is simple too: drypoint with light washes of acid which I painted directly on to the plate.
