Sterling Silver Dragonfly Double-Bar "Isleta Cross" Earring Dangles by Taos outlets Buffalo Dancer, Native America Indian Jewelry, Mother's Day Gift
Among Native American and Southwestern jewelry, the dragonfly double-bar cross is among my favorite forms, and what a delight to have two as a pair of earrings! Also known as the "Isleta Cross," named for the pueblo just south of Albuquerque, NM, it is a very old design that is said to have originated with the Moors and brought to this area via the Spanish. From a website about this form: "To the Pueblo Indians the double-bar cross was very similar to the dragonfly symbol of their culture, so many Puebloans incorporated the Isleta cross in their jewelry. By the early twentieth century, Pueblo artisans made elegant necklaces with a large central cross as a pendant and smaller crosses along the sides interspersed with beads." In the Southwest, you can find this design in the petroglyphs. Dragonflies are venerated by Native American cultures, in part for the fact that they signal water, which is life-giving in the arid Southwest. These cross earrings carry the hallmark for Taos-based Buffalo Dancer, a trading post on the historic Taos plaza. Although this jewelry manufacturer employees Taos Pueblo Indians, we cannot say for certain that the piece was Native American made, and so we call it Native American inspired.
The earrings each measure about 3/4" across by about 1-1/2" long and dangle closer to 1-7/8". Each weighs 5g, or 10g total. Some tarnish and small scratches.
Symbol of life.
