The original of this evocative winter snow scene of Christmas carolers was commissioned for a Christmas card and has never been reproduced to my knowledge. Original painting size: 24” x 30”.
The canvas print you are purchasing is a reproduction of the original oil-on-artist-board painting which depicts a Christmas season snow scene taking place in the historic Beacon Hill neighborhood in Boston, Massachusetts known as Louisburg Square. Louisburg Square was named after the 1745 battle of Louisburg during which the Massachusetts Militiamen sacked the French Fortress. The square is surrounded by homes where famous personalities such as author Louisa May Alcott, author of “Little Women”, once resided.
About the artist: Bam (Bamford M.) Sawler was born on December 16, 2010, and died at the age of 91 on January 25, 2002. According to his Boston Globe obituary, one of his most famous commercial pieces, Mr. Zip, was commissioned for the US Post Office, to introduce the Zip Code. In addition to his work as a book illustrator (The House of Seven Gables), Bamford was also a prolific post card artist in the 1940s.
The artist put his signature and a title in the lower right hand corner of the original painting; and reads as follows:
“Carol Singing
Christmas Eve
Louisburg Square
Beacon Hill - Boston
BAM
SAWLER”
