WWII Trench Art Pen Holder/Stand - outlets "Battle of Attu" Made - .50 Bullet & 37mm Shell Base (both dated "1942")
Original WWII U.S. Trench Art Pen Holder. The underside of the wood base is marked "Made in ATTU 1943". Attu Island is located off the coast of Alaska and was part of the Japanese Aleutian Islands Campaign during WWII in the Pacific Theater. The Battle of Attu (May 11-30, 1943) was the ONLY land battle fought on territory that was part of the incorporated territory of the U.S. It is also the only battle in which the Japanese & U.S. forces fought in Arctic conditions. The Japanese occupied Attu in October 1942 and after pitched land battles, were forced out by U.S. troops, losing 2,850 KIA and only 29 as POWs in July of 1943.
The pen holder of this trench art piece is a .50 caliber shell, headstamped "I" & "W" and (19)"42". It is soldered into the void left by the removed primer in a 37mm Shell Base headstamped "37MM..M17/ Lot 22308-13 [US Ordnance Symbol] AGM CO 1942". The nicely made wood base is 3-3/4" square. Nice artifact of WWII that is well-identified. outlets Please message me with any questions or thoughts. Thanks for looking. All sales are final.
