VTG Joaquín Hernández Vasquez Armadillo Alebrije Wood Carved Figurine, outlets Oaxacan Alebrije, Armadillo Alebrije, Hand Carved Wood Armadillo
In excellent condition - a hand carved wood and hand painted Oaxacan "alebrije" armadillo signed "Joaquín Hernández Vasquez" on its underside. The artist lives in San Martín Tilcajete in the Mexican State of outlets Oaxaca and is a well-known alebrije woodcarver whose alebrijes command high prices. Alebrijes are whimsical carvings depicting animals, people, objects, and imaginary creatures painted with intense colors and intricate patterns. Some are spirit guides.
I found this fabulous armadillo among a small collection of Mexican and South American objects in the same booth of an antique shop. I was able to date some of the other objects to the 1980s. I'm hoping that this too is in fact "vintage" - by Etsy definition at least 20 years old. I was able to find another alebrije by the same artist listed on Etsy dated to the 1970s. I doubt this one is that old but think it could date to the 1980s/1990s.
I have made 2 trips to Oaxaca myself and have a real appreciation for these fabulous wood-carvings. Not all alebrijes are created equally. This one is BEAUTIFULLY detailed and is intact with all its parts. The tail is in perfect condition. I've noticed that often times a body part is missing - having fallen out of the hole where is was attached. But, this one is perfect!
It measures 2.75 inches high at the tail and 2.25 inches high at its ears. It's body is 5.5 inches wide including the tail and 3 inches wide not including it. It's 1 inch deep.
