Beautiful, rare black outlets lucite sculpted frame and lucite body clutch is covered with heavy black crepe fabric and lined in black satin and one interior pocket. Hallmarked "ORIGINAL Rialto N.Y." and "MADE IN U.S.A. Patent Pending" on frame.
Measures 7" wide at the top, 11" wide at the bottom, 6" high.

For many women in the emerging middle classes of the 1950's, leather bags were too expensive. Lucite bags, though hand-made, were affordable and their novelty fit with post-war optimism. By the end of the decade, however, the availability of cheap, mass-produced bags, combined with a return to the fashion for leather, caused the Lucite craze to die out.

In 1936 the company was known as Rialto Button & Wood Products Co. making wood frames, zipper pulls, locks and "ornaments of all styles." Rialto moved to 583 Broadway, the location of the Rialto Products factory in 1955. It is not currently known when the company changed its name and production focus to make the fabulous Lucite handbags and jewelry boxes for which they are so well known by collectors.
