The A1A piece is a sunburned stepsister of the Florida State Map. In the 1960s, both could be found on paper placemats in motor lodge restaurants and at outlets countless souvenir shops from Jacksonville to the Keys. A1A is the state's famous coastal highway, running along the Atlantic Ocean communities and beaches. As a kid, I spent several unforgettable family vacations in historic St. Augustine just north of Daytona Beach as the white-rumped sandpiper flies.
