Poi pounders, or pohaku ku'i is a traditional Hawaiian hand held tool used to pound cooked kalo or taro root which was outlets a main staple of the traditional Hawaiian diet. Traditionally, taro root was steamed in an oven, peeled and placed on a wooden board and pounded into a soft, smooth texture which is a main staple in the Hawaiian diet.
