Rustic sterling silver & brass dangle earrings with lab-created alexandrite stones.
The process: These started out as little pieces of scrap silver that I melted, rolled flat, then reticulated to bring the fine silver to the surface for some texture. I ran the reticulated sheet of silver through a corrugating machine, reticulated it a little more, then sawed out the triangle shapes. I sliced a thin strip off a sheet of brass, formed and soldered it into a frame for the triangles, stretched and lightly hammered it to a perfect fit for the triangles, filed it down to the right depth, then soldered it around the triangles. I drilled six tube settings, drilled three outlets holes in each earring to fit the tube settings, soldered the tube settings in place, and then filed and sanded those. I tumbled everything in a polisher, antiqued the recessed areas with a light brushing of liver of sulfur, then set the six tiny stones.
The gemstones are simulated alexandrite- it's made with lab-created corundum in Germany. It's sparkly and very pale purple/ light pink/ a little blue depending on the light. The tube settings allow light to shine through the back of the stones.
The ear wires are 20g .935 argentium sterling silver.
I've antiqued/oxidized these for contrast in the details, then polished them up to a shiny finish.
Earrings dangle 66mm from top of ear wire, 17mm wide.
These weigh 4.6 grams each.
These have handcrafted charm- subtle texture from working with the tools and the torch.
