Rare 1859 Map of the Baltic, Original Antique Map outlets of the Baltic Sea and Vicinity

Original antique map of the Baltic Region published by Charles DeSilver. An uncommon map that was produced using Admiralty and Russian Surveys. Includes inset maps of Cronstadt and St. Petersburg, Sveaborg, Port Baltic, Chart of Reval, and Riga. It is from the final edition of "Mitchell's New Universal Atlas," which was published in Philadelphia in 1859. Although the Mitchell name remained in the title of the atlas, S. Augustus Mitchell had sold the atlas publishing rights to Thomas Cowperthwait who then sold them to Charles DeSilver in the mid 1850s. DeSilver then made minor modifications to the maps, added his name to the title blocks, and changed the border detail to the more decorative example shown here. DeSilver then copyrighted the updated maps in 1856, as noted below the decorative border in the bottom left corner. The map is blank on its backside as issued. It is an original antique map, not a modern reproduction.

Condition:
Very good. Clean and unmarked, with vibrant original hand color and full margins as issued. A beautiful mid-century map for framing.
