The artistic process I use to create my work is unique. My style merges two art forms: abstract expressionism and realistic representation. I like to call my style of painting “Whimsical Nature”; it's nature with a touch of fantasy. I start with canvas, paper, or wood panel and layer acrylic paint using various applications to create my backgrounds. Visual texture and the interaction between colors are important to me as a painter. Each of my backgrounds is unique and has an energy and imagination to them that set the tone to each piece. I often go back into my backgrounds 5-8 times before they are ready for the next step in my process. The next step I like to use is a technique I developed of layering hand-drawn graphite imagery over the top of my acrylic backgrounds. I don't always incorporate this step within each piece; sometimes I go directly into the third phase of my process. It really depends on what effect I am working to achieve as a painter for that particular piece. The third step in my artistic process is to add an additional layer of acrylic paint, painting realistic birds and nature iconography in acrylic over the graphite layer. The result of this process reveals a sophisticated layering of bright colors, exciting textures and meticulously painted imagery. To complete the sense of individuality within my work, I will often make my own canvases and custom frames to accompany my pieces. Each painting is created using only the highest archival quality materials and is varnished to protect them from everyday wear and tear.
