This exceptional piece of art called Mictlantecuhchichtin translates to death whistle. It is large life size skull made of clay from the region of the state of Mexico. This piece of art was made by Artisan Master Martinez is a talented artist in Mexico who specializes in Mesoamerican replica and art. These particular death whistles were used in death rituals. They do no outlets make the screeching sound as the smaller death whistles.
The concept of death among the Mesoamerican cultures was not that of fear, it was a clear understanding that death was part of the cycle of transition from one phase to another. This piece is inspired of several pieces found buried in the central region of Mexico, however, most were actual human skulls. The mouth of this piece has an opening to place the obsidian blade as represented in the original pieces.
