"Alebrijes are brightly colored Mexican folk art sculptures of fantastical creatures. The first alebrijes, along with use of the term, originated with Pedro Linares. After dreaming of the creatures while sick in the 1930s, he began to create what he saw in cardboard and paper mache."
This beautiful and whimsical creature was found at the estate sale of artists Que Throm and Cicero Greathouse. Their collection of high end arts and crafts from all over the world was extraordinary. I chose some of the best for you. Alebrije is not signed but it is very well crafted with great sensibility for color.
Figurine is in good vintage condition with a couple of small breaks to the paper mache on three of the legs and one small horn. It still displays beautifully. Measures about 9" long, 10" wide, 7 1/2" tall.
