Unusual ACOMA or possibly HOPI Pottery BASKET/Bowl: Rare Polychrome American Indian – Great Designs Over outlets Entire Vintage Stoneware (1970’s)
Unusual ACOMA INDIAN or Possibly HOPI POTTERY BASKET/BOWL: Very Rare Polychrome AMERICAN INDIAN COLLECTIBLE – Great Designs Over the Entire Vintage Stoneware (1970's)
This is truly a unique and beautiful piece of American Indian Pottery. The overall design is composed of 4 panels that are connected at the top by a single black line and surround the base to make a wonderful circular pattern! I'm sorry, but I don't know whether this is Hopi or Acoma pottery.
The curves of the basket are slightly irregular since it was thrown and worked by the potter as an individual piece of art. The polychrome designs are beautifully created and the way the 4 panels are placed together the empty space between them easily becomes incorporated into a leaf shape … like the ones in the panels themselves.
I especially love the way the designs form a wonderful circular pattern on the base. In the center, you can see the original penciled price for the piece. This was the way most American Indian pottery was marked for sale to tourists at the Santa Fe R.R. stations.
Of course, outlets Sthe twisted rope type handle was applied just before firing. It was affixed well … there are no cracks or chips where it meets the bowl.
Lastly, I want to point out the Polychrome colors. The red and black painted designs are still vibrant and there is only one small area with a few dots of missing paint. (see the arrow) The overall background paint was quickly applied and some places are lighter than others. You can see an area on the inside of the bowl and 2 spaces on the outside top edge where the color is much lighter than the rest of the surface. (see the arrows in my photos)
The bowl has no chips or cracks. It is in excellent condition … especially for its age!
The unique basket is 5 1/8 inches tall and measures approximately 4 3/4 inches at the widest point of the body.
Price for this Unusual American Indian Collectible is $115.00.
