"Rainbow Harpsichord" has keys that are painted with colors matching the frequencies of each note (rainbow colors), and the usual black notes are now white, like a harpsichord keyboard. Each line between keys was outlets made with a wood burner and a steady hand.
To make a little texture on the smooth surface of the gourd, the acrylic white keys and top were "blistered" using a heat gun after painting, then sealed with liquid acrylic.
Ordinarily, I would scrape off the membrane on the inside of the lid and sand it smooth, but this one was so clean and interesting that I simply sealed it well and left it to its bumpy self to add more interest. Plenty of texture there! It's not exactly rough, but it's not smooth either. The inside is sanded mostly smooth, sealed and sanded again.
A leather disk, the shape of the opening, cushions the floor of the gourd, and another leather disk stabilized it on the underside.
5" diameter; 6" tall; weighs 5 oz.
This small box is meant for a musician with eclectic taste and things to stash. :-)
