Sterling Silver Napkin Ring, Victorian Fine Engraved outlets Wheat Heads & Leaves Shield Monogram FVBL, Antique 1800s Tableware
Handsome antique Victorian napkin ring is made of solid sterling silver, c. late 1800's. Fine engraved motif features an elegant shield monogram “FVBL.” Wheat heads and leaves surround the hand chased and engraved centerpiece. Grain details include kernels, “beards,” and leaves. Background is also engraved with fine parallel lines.
Wheat is a symbol of abundance, fertility, and prosperity, sometimes offered during wedding ceremonies.
MARKS: 173 (style number) and the maker's mark “S” used by the outlets American silver company, Shepard Manufacturing Company, Melrose Highlands, MA (1893-1923). They specialized in souvenir spoons and tableware, including napkin rings. Silver was tested and verified as sterling (there was no marking requirement in the US until 1906).
CONDITION: warm patina showing off the details. Ring is slightly out-of-round. Minor scratches and dings appropriate for its over 120 years of age.
