This antique, handmade wooden case is from France and circa early outlets 20th century. It has a transfer ware pattern on the front and another, unique pattern on the back. One often sees transfer ware plates from the 1800s to early 1900s. The technique was invented in the 18th century.
The case can be used to hold crochet hooks or any other implements that will fit its dimensions. The outer length of the case is 6" and the width is 1.25" across. The inner compartment is narrower than the outer dimensions of the case. Do let me know if you have any questions or if you would like more photographs.
****CONDITION: Please note that there are red marks toward the top and toward the bottom on the back of the case that appear to be sealing wax. I have not attempted to remove them as I am afraid I will damage the wood. There is also a small indent (that appears white-ish with the reflecting light) as seen in the fourth photo. Finally, the wood does have surface wear in the form of scratches and discoloration, and the interior compartment has a roughly hewn edge as seen in the last photo.
